 INSTRUMENT Helicopter Training Prerequisites
1. Pilot Certificate Requirements
  • Hold at least a current private pilot certificate with an aircraft category and class rating that applies to the instrument rating sought.
2. Language Proficiency
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.

Steps to Obtain an Instrument Rating (IR(H))
​1. Written Test
  • Pass a written test given by the FAA.
2. Flight Time and Training
  • Fulfill the minimum requirements of flight time and training specified by the FAA.
3. Oral and Flight Test
  • Pass an oral and flight test given by the FAA or an approved Designated Pilot Examiner.

Minimum Requirements for an IR(H) - Part 611. Cross-Country Flight Time
  • Have logged at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command, of which at least 10 hours must be in helicopters for an instrument-helicopter rating.
2. Instrument Time Requirements
  • Have a total of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, including:
    a. At least 15 hours of instrument flight training from an authorized instructor in the aircraft category for which the instrument rating is sought.
    b. At least 3 hours of instrument training that is appropriate to the instrument rating sought from an authorized instructor in preparation for the practical test (check ride) within the 2 months prior to the month of the test.
    c. Instrument training specific to helicopters on cross-country flight procedures that includes at least one cross-country flight in a helicopter that is performed under IFR and consists of:
    • A distance of at least 100 nautical miles along airways or ATC-directed routing.
    • An instrument approach at each airport.
    • Three different kinds of approaches with the use of navigation systems.

ADD-ON HELICOPTER INSTRUMENT TRAINING


1. Eligibility Requirements
  • Pilot Certificate: The applicant must hold at least a valid Private Pilot certificate with a Rotorcraft category and Helicopter class rating.
  • Language Proficiency: The applicant must be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.
  • Applicant must also hold an instrument rating in another category and class to classify this as an "Add-ON" Rating
2. Flight Experience Requirements
  • Instrument Flight Time:
    The applicant must have at least 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument flight time, which should include:
    • At least 3 hours of instrument training from an authorized instructor within the last 60 days before the practical test.
    • At least 15 hours of instrument flight training from an authorized instructor in helicopters.
3. Cross-Country Flight Requirements
  • Cross-Country Flight: The training must include at least one cross-country flight under instrument flight rules (IFR) that meets the following criteria:
    • A distance of at least 100 nautical miles.
    • An instrument approach at each airport.
    • A minimum of three different types of instrument approaches using navigation systems.
